Update On Safety And Security At Illegal Protest

Oudtshoorn, 17 March 2023 – The Municipality is in contact with Brigadier Crafford, the Commanding officer of Oudtshoorn SAPS and other security entities to prepare for the EFF’s planned countrywide disruptions on Monday 20 March 2023. The Executive Mayor, Alderman Chris Macpherson as well as the SAPS are aware of a group of people planning a peaceful march from Bongolethu to the Municipal building on Monday and contingency plans are in place to ensure that the march will be peaceful. No request has been received indicating that a petition will be handed over as was the request for today’s march which has been cancelled by the organiser.

The public is urged to not take part in any unauthorised protests and to please report any incidents or incitement to the SAPS immediately.

The Municipality will remain open on Monday, 20 March 2023, and municipal service delivery will continue as normal. The Municipal Law Enforcement Department and Traffic Services are in constant contact with the South African Police Services (SAPS) to ensure that public order and safety are maintained.
