Oudtshoorn, 16 August 2024 – The Greater Oudtshoorn Municipality is currently responding to a severe incident that occurred on the evening of Thursday, 15 August 2024, in Rose Valley. A truck tragically collided with two RDP houses, leaving the properties severely damaged and uninhabitable and the truck driver in hospital with serious injuries. Immediate action was taken by municipal councillors and management to provide emergency relief and support to the affected families.
In response to the disaster, the Acting Municipal Manager, Noel Van Stade, promptly authorized the transportation of furniture and emergency accommodation for one of the affected families. Additionally, the acting Municipal Manager has made telephonic contact with Grain Carriers Transportation Service, the company involved in the accident. Although the company has not yet committed to specific actions, they have assured the Municipality they will provide feedback during the course of the day.
The Municipality has committed to several measures to support the affected families. These include assisting within the framework of existing policies and legislation, supporting the families in their engagement with Grain Carriers, and establishing a committee led by the Manager of Human Settlements to liaise with the families and monitor the situation. The Municipality remains dedicated to providing the necessary support during this challenging time.
The Executive Mayor, Alderman Johan Allers, wishes to express his gratitude to the disaster management team, officials, and council members who rushed to the scene to assist and also want to thank the police and community for their swift response and assistance.
“To the two families affected by this tragedy, please be assured of our continued support during this time. We also extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the truck driver, who reportedly suffered a heart attack behind the wheel.” Disaster Management also had to seal the truck’s diesel tank that was leaking, and together with Metro Ambulance Services had to remove the driver from the vehicle.
Additionally, a warning has been issued via loud hailing to residents in the area who took cargo from the truck, advising them not to consume it, as it is not safe for human consumption.
The Municipality’s housing department is working on securing accommodation for the displaced families, with Councillor Bentley having assisted with temporary arrangements last night. The acting Municipal Manager is in contact with the truck owners to resolve the situation with the reconstruction of the houses and alternative accommodation for the families. The Municipality provided assistance during this emergency and is now working with the company to ensure the families receive further support.
