Oudtshoorn, 23 August 2022 – The Planning and Development Department of Oudtshoorn Municipality held a photo session on Monday, 22 August 2022, at the municipality for all the sportswomen- and men of the Greater Oudtshoorn for their outstanding performances to take their sports careers to the next level.
Oudtshoorn municipality offered financial support for sports development of R135 0000 from the beginning of the financial year until now, to all our athletes who attend national and international sports events. Cllr Barbara Owen, Portfolio Chairperson: Department Planning & Development, welcomed all parents, all representatives of the different sports codes as well as the athletes whom this session was planned for.
“It is one of our great highlights every year to be able to recognize the sportsmen who perform with such excellence and we are privileged to share this with you”, said Alderman Chris MacPherson, Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn. “It takes a lot to get to where you are today and for that we acknowledge you. It is a great joy for us to be able to see our sportsmen- and women recognized in this way. The Greater Oudtshoorn and the council members appreciate you”.
The darts champions, who represented Oudtshoorn in Johannesburg at the S.A. Championship event, won their division and came home with the gold medal. Allanzo Mapoe, a blind cricketer from Oudtshoorn, who attends a school for the visually impaired in the Boland, was selected for the Boland Blind Cricket team who will participate in Blind Cricket South Africa’s National T20 Blind Cricket Tournament, in Durban from 01-07 October 2022. This tournament is a wonderful opportunity for our player to play competitive, provincial blind cricket and to put his skills to the test against similarly able persons.
A total of 23 primary and high school hockey players from Van Reede Primary, Wesbank Primary, Laurus Primary, Oudtshoorn High, and Gymnasium High represent the Eden Province at the various national hockey tournaments.
Three rugby players from the Oudtshoorn School of Skills were part of the SWD LSEN rugby team which participated in the LSEN U.18 National Craven Week in George.
10 athletes from the Grebe Kickboxing Club are on their way to the Africa Continental WAKO Kickboxing Championship from 25 – 29 August 2022.
Anando Olivier and Audan Olivier will represent South Africa at the WAKO World Kickboxing Championships in Italy from 30 September 2022 until 10 October 2022.
Two athletes from the Oudtshoorn, Luciano Samson and Sarah-Jane Lewis will represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Karate Championships that will be held in Birmingham, England from 7 – 11 September 2022.
Antonio Bruiners and Camden Schoeman were selected for the South African Schools U18 A Rugby team which played against France over the past weekend.
Edith Joseph, the Interim chairperson of the Greater Oudtshoorn Sports Council, also attended the session.
