Oudtshoorn, 25 October 2016 – The Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn, Cllr. Colan Sylvester has on Tuesday, 25 October 2016 officially launched the upgrade of Reggie Oliphant Street in Smartie Town.
The partially upgraded Reggie Olifant Street in Ward 5 will be constructed as an Oudtshoorn-based contractor will commence with the paving of on Wednesday, 26 October 2016. Cllr. Sylvester accompanied by Ward 5 Councillor Hendrik Ruiters visited Reggie Olifant Street to officially announce the upgrade.
Addressing the residents in that area, Cllr. Sylvester said, “It is an extraordinary pleasure for me to launch the construction of Reggie Oliphant Street – the upgrade of this street will certainly improve the lives of the people of this street and other people.
“To restore one’s dignity starts with improving the living conditions of that person inside his/her yard, the next step is to improve the living condition outside the person’s yard into the streets. This upgrade will ensure a much cleaner environment especially in rainy days.”
“The Municipality meticulously worked within the confines of the Supply Chain Management policy on the appointment of service provider,” Cllr. Sylvester added. The contractor, The Business Zone, has contracted two local sub-contractors and employed 18 workers of which six are skilled and 12 as general workers. Issue of proximity of workers in the construction area has also been considered in the appointments.
The construction will last for about 5 to 6 weeks. The street will be paved using 60mm interlocking pavers. Other imminent street upgrades are Xola Street in Bongolethu and the entrance to the Oudtshoorn Thusong Centre early next year. This is one of the 100 Days Service Delivery projects as was announced by the Executive Mayor in September 2016.
