Oudtshoorn commences public participation meetings for 2018/2019 IDP

Oudtshoorn, 04 October 2017 – Oudtshoorn Municipality will host public participation meetings in all wards next week, to gather needs of the residents for the review of the 2018/2019 Integrated Development Plan (IDP).

The Municipality invites all communities within the greater Oudtshoorn to attend these meetings to make their contribution toward the development of their respective wards and of the entire town. These meetings also provide opportunities for communities to interact with municipal officials and councillors.

Each municipality is, by law, required to undertake a developmentally-oriented planning, so as to ensure that it strives to achieve the objects of local government set out in section 152 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which are as follows:

  • to provide democratic and accountable government for local communities;
  • to ensure the provision of services to communities in a sustainable manner;
  • to promote social and economic development;
  • to promote a safe and healthy environment; and
  • to encourage the involvement of communities and community organisations in the matters of local government.

This will be first review of the current 5-year IDP which was approved in May this year. The law necessitates that the IDP be reviewed annually.

“It is of utmost importance that each resident participates in the development of their community. The IDP links integrates and coordinates plans and takes into account proposals for the development of the municipality,” said the Executive Mayor, Colan Sylvester. “It furthermore aligns the resources and capacity of the municipality with the implementation of the plan and informs policy framework and general basis on which annual budgets must be based.”

The Municipality has made provision of transport for residents in the outskirts of Oudtshoorn including the areas of De Rust and Dysselsdorp. Enquiries in this regard can be directed to an IDP official, Ms. Thembeka Ngqeza on (044) 203 3972. Further information about the IDP meetings is available on the Municipal Website, on this link: http://www.oudtshoorn.gov.za/download_document/1258
