Oudtshoorn, 22 November 2017 – Preparations for the Mayoral Golf Day to be held at the Oudtshoorn Golf Club on 2 December are in full swing.
One Hundred and Twenty (120) players are targeted for the fundraising golf event aimed at securing quality education for the youth of the greater Oudtshoorn. Information supplied by organisers states that about 50% of the total targeted entries have been received. These entries stretch as far as George, Plettenberg Bay and Kareedouw in the Eastern Cape.
Ian Laubscher, one of the organisers and the Municipal Sport Development Officer believes that more entries are to be received next week. “We want to urge golfers to hurry up and enter as the list is getting full, even though entries close on 1st of December; we encourage early registration to golfers.” Laubscher appealed to potential sponsors to continue supporting the Mayoral Golf Day to make it not only a memorable success but a contributor to the future of the youth. “Businesses, locally, regionally and nationally are still welcome to support the Mayoral Golf Day to either find the Tee, Green or the prizes,”
Mayor Colan Sylvester initiated the Golf Day to help students further their studies. “Every year thousands of Grade 12 students complete high schools but are unable to go to university or college for higher education training. This year the municipality managed to sponsor 10 local students to attend the University of Free State program at the South Cape College (Oudtshoorn Campus).”
“We also managed to sponsor 10 graduate students from Oudtshoorn to do their practical internship at the municipality with the help of the Western Cape Provincial Treasury,” Sylvester added.
Sylvester, a former school principal says education is closer to his heart and it is one of the most powerful tools that can change the world and make it a better place. Quoting the late Nelson Mandela, he said, “Education is the key to changing people’s lives and reducing poverty”.
The Mayor intends to raise R 250 000 from the Golf Day.
