Oudtshoorn, 23 September 2016 – The newly elected councillors of the greater Oudtshoorn started a week long Integrated Councillor Induction Programme (ICIP) conducted by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) on Monday, 19 September at the Thusong Service Centre.
The five-day national training programme is aimed at ensuring that the newly elected and returning councillors are capacitated to implement their leadership roles, legislative framework, key municipal processes, developmental local government system and service delivery and ensure that councillors live up their promise of delivering a “Better life for all”. The ICIP is accredited by the Local Government Sector Education Training Authority (LGSETA) and its modules are pegged at National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 3, and NQF level 5.
The Speaker, Cllr. Julia le Roux-Krowitz who as the chairperson of Council is also responsible to ensure compliance in the council and its committees said: “This training places a solid foundation where each councillor will be held accountable, with clear monitoring and evaluation of performance systems in place, and clearly defined outcomes.” Le Roux Krowitz admitted that, “citizens are becoming more aware of their rights and these can no longer be taken for granted”.
This is the part of series of training programmes intended to capacitate and develop councillors in leadership and management, also from Universities she said. The next phase of training will take place in January 2017, Le Roux-Krowitz concluded.
