Oudtshoorn, 02 October 2024 – The Greater Oudtshoorn Youth Council was inaugurated in September in the Council Chambers, with the Speaker and Councillors present as part of the formal process. An important item will soon be tabled to the council, which includes the adoption of the Youth Council’s constitution and policies, marking a pivotal step forward in empowering our youth and enhancing their role in the community.

Under the guidance of the office of the Executive Speaker, Alderlady Suzane Jansen, the Youth Council will receive invaluable support as they move ahead with their initiatives. This collaboration will strengthen their efforts and ensure they are well equipped to address the needs and aspirations of young people in our municipality.

In addition to their foundational work, the Youth Council will collaborate with Ward Committee Members to implement youth programs tailored to the specific needs of their respective wards. Elections for Youth Council subcommittees will also take place, enabling focused efforts on youth development initiatives that resonate within each community.

Looking ahead, the Youth Council is set to attend workshops at the Provincial Parliament in October 2024, where they will engage in training on governance, legislation, and various other topics crucial to their growth as leaders. Furthermore, they plan to participate in workshops organized by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) to enhance their understanding of councillors’ roles, responsibilities, and youth development strategies.

The Greater Oudtshoorn Youth Council has been officially recognized and endorsed by the office of the Executive Speaker, following nearly six years of dedication and hard work by its members. This council, consisting of young leaders from the 13 wards of the Greater Oudtshoorn, is already making a profound impact in our community through remarkable programs, including:

  • Friday Safe Space
  • Saturday Social Sport
  • Registering youth on online job portals
  • Assisting youth with college/university registrations
  • Providing support with CVs, cover letters, and job applications

As the Youth Council embarks on this exciting journey, they are committed to working closely with the Executive Speaker’s office to continue their development as future leaders and to make a lasting positive difference in our community.
