Diesel truck accident causes contamination at Grootrivier – Residents warned not to use water

Oudtshoorn, 15 August 2017 – Residents at Valkenskraal near De Rust are urged not to use the Grootrivier water both for human consumption and live stock following diesel spillage into the river on Tuesday afternoon (15 August).

A truck tanker overturned at the Meiringspoort Pass between Oudtshoorn and Beaufort West after the driver lost control of the vehicle. The tanker of the truck containing diesel fell off the truck and spilled liters of diesel into the Grootrivier.

Emergency personnel from both the Oudtshoorn Municipality and the Eden district Municipality are at the scene. Meiringspoort remains open; traffic is regulated with stop and go.
