Oudtshoorn, 01 June 2023 – Despite the rain during the past month, work on De Jager’s athletics track is on schedule. Quotations for the resurfacing of the entire facility were requested in 2015 at which stage the costs would have been R22 million. Last year an amount of R10 million was budgeted for replacing the tartan surface which would have been enough to do 3 000 square metres. Thanks to good planning and excellent cooperation among the different contractors a total of 3 500 square metres can be replaced.
Areas prioritised for replacement are two inner lanes, the 100m home stretch and the first bend. Preparation work of the base has been completed and it is expected that the laying of the tartan surface will start next week.
With the completion of the current work, the whole track will be in full use. It is estimated that work will be completed by the first week in July.
Construction work on the tartan surface started just after the Klein Karoo Arts Festival in April 2023.
