Clean up campaign launched

Oudtshoorn, 20 September 2016 – The Deputy Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn Council Cllr. Noluthando Mwati has officially launched a clean-up campaign attached to the Council’s 100 Days service delivery plan on Monday, 19 September 2016.

Addressing attendees of the launch consisting of councillors, management, workers and some residents, Cllr Mwati said the clean-up may have economic spin-offs for the greater Oudtshoorn. “We cannot employ each and every person, but as we are doing this programme cleaning our town, there may be more opportunities being created as investors may be interested to invest in our town,” she said.

Cllr. Mwati also encouraged cleanliness to the people of the Greater Oudtshoorn. “Cleanliness starts within your house, in your yard, to your neighbour, the entire street then to the whole community.” She added that it is wrong to litter around and all of us should be ambassadors of cleanliness quoting that “cleanliness is next to Godliness. Go out there bring back that Oudtshoorn, that was there long time ago. It was the cleanest town in the Southern Cape, but now the dirtiest town – so let’s go and do it.”

The Municipal community services has availed 39 workers from cleansing and parks & recreation services for the cleaning campaign. An additional 70 volunteers from the Community Works Programme (CWP) will also assist with the cleaning. CWP personnel work eight days a month which translates to two days a week. The CWP will further assist with cleaning equipment ferried from Cape Town.

Mr. Herold Lekay, manager for cleansing department explained that the cleaning will focus on wards 1, 2, 3 and 7 in the next three weeks, then to other wards later. Ordinary cleansing services will continue as normal, Lekay said.

This clean-up campaign called “Keep Oudtshoorn Clean” is part of the recently announced 100 Day Service Delivery plan which is aimed at stopping and preventing corruption, creating work opportunities and improve service delivery. Actions contained in the plan will be effected within 100 days, some may include medium to long term plans that will kick off during the 100-Day period.
