Library Week: Fine Free Week 18 – 24 March 2024

Oudtshoorn, March 12, 2024 – All the libraries in the Oudtshoorn Municipal area will form part of the annual celebration of Library Week. The annual celebration of Library Week from 18 March until 24 March 2024 forms part of a national drive to promote information services and resources as well as reading and the benefits of literacy.  This is made possible by the Western Cape Library Services in partnership with local authorities and public libraries.

FINE FREE WEEK is also part of the Library Week. Residents are urged to take their long overdue books to the library and start taking out books again. No questions will be asked, and all old fines will be waived. You still have to pay for damaged and lost library materials. The Western Cape Library Service urges the public to take advantage of this amnesty period, visit their local library, and also explore the exciting Library Week program.

The purpose of celebrating Library Week is the marketing and promotion of public libraries to library users and potential library users, making people aware of the importance of their library, and attracting new users.  The public is encouraged to highlight the cultural, educational, and recreational aspects of the library as they play a vital role in the information and technological age we live in, as much of the work we do has become information based.

The Libraries of the Greater Oudtshoorn Municipality will embark on community outreaches and programs in collaboration with FAMSA (Family and Marriage Society of South Africa) at the Toekomsrus Clinic and Sonneblom Creche, to make an impact on the lives of their community as well as other activities, amongst other activities.

The national theme is: Libraries foster social cohesion.
