Bookwurms Triumph In Dysselsdorp Readathon

Oudtshoorn, 21 November 2023 — The Dysselsdorp Library, in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), successfully hosted a Readathon in Dysselsdorp. The event, held on 16 November 2023, saw enthusiastic participation from Grade 4 pupils of P J Badenhorst, Dysselsdorp Primary, and St Konrad schools. The event was opened by councillor Liluth Van Rooyen.

Jonathan Bessie, from the Dysselsdorp Library, highlighted the Readathon’s primary objectives, emphasizing its role in fostering excitement about reading among children. The event also aimed to assess the students’ proficiency in using punctuation marks and to encourage the use of imagination while reading.

Beaulla Stofile from DCAS, expressed her delight at the collaboration’s success and emphasized the department’s commitment to promoting reading, particularly in rural areas. Ms Stofile noted the importance of partnerships with programs like the Extended Public Work Programme (EPWP) to achieve their mandate. She commended the active involvement of parents and teachers in supporting their children during the event.

The winners of the Dysselsdorp Readathon were announced, with Elzonethia Koopman securing the third place, Waynechia Lottering claiming the second place, and Herrick Saaiers emerging as the first-place winner. All of the winners are from PJ Badenhorst. Their outstanding performances showcased not only their reading skills but also their creativity and understanding of punctuation.

The Oudtshoorn Municipality and DCAS realises that these initiatives play a vital role in cultivating a love for reading and fostering educational development in our communities.

“The Dysselsdorp Readathon, a successful collaboration between the library and DCAS, celebrated young readers for their impressive skills and creativity. We are so proud of all the participants,” said Deidre Carelse, Manager Library Services.
